Privacy Awareness

The goal of this research and webpage is to elicit awareness and agency in protecting your private information when sharing images in social networks. The interface will explain how algorithms make profiles about you by collecting data revealing personal information. This research is part of a project entitled "Privacy Awareness", and the project is externally sponsored by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

Participation is entirely voluntary. You can withdraw at any time up to the point of publication and there will be no disadvantage if you decide not to complete the study. All information collected will be confidential, stored securely and permanently deleted after five years. Participants recruited through Prolific will be paid following the Prolific policy.

If you agree to participate in this research, please consider the following:

• Use an image that is already public (e.g. you shared it in Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, WhatsApp status). Note that the analysis your image will go through might reveal information you are not aware of as the labelling has the potential to cause some offense, for example by misgendering somebody. Please be aware of this; you might be feeling uneasy.
• We will collect information about your age range and gender for statistical purposes. This won't be disclosed in any term and will be kept confidential.
• Images and the resulting data processing will be for the use of this research only; despite any findings will be publicly disseminated in research papers, reports and conferences, any information that might identify you won’t be disclosed at any time.
• We won't be accepting and using any image containing any adult, illegal, underaged and upsetting content or images that may reveal explicitly the user's identity or strictly confidential information (e.g. a copy of an ID).
